9/11- A Day to Remember

We Pause . . .

We decided to take a break this week from our current blog series, “Documentation 101” to pause in remembrance of those who gave all on that dreadful day in American history…September 11, 2001.

It’s one of those days burned in the memory of every American.

Where Were You? Where Were They?

“Where were you on 9/11?”

Certainly there isn’t a single person that doesn’t remember where they were when the news broke that terrorists had commandeered aircraft and used them as missiles to strike down innocent lives in the heart of Manhattan and Washington.

But for those of us who serve in Fire, EMS and/or Law Enforcement the question to ask is “Where were they?”  They- our brothers and sisters of the NYFD, the NYPD and the Port Authority Police. Where were they that day?

While others ran FROM ground zero, they ran TO ground zero!

Only Action!

In a display of the most valiant bravery known to man, there were no second thoughts that day.  There was only action.  Selfless action with regard not to their own lives but thinking only of the mission that fate placed on them that day.  The mission of saving the lives of the innocent that day outweighed their own lives.

A total of 343 members of the NYFD, 23 brave officers of the NYPD and 37 Port Authority Officers gave the ultimate sacrifice that dark day.  Today we remember them as we will always remember them.  Their names are written in the annals of American history side-by-side with brave men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow man.

Greater Love Has No One?

I’m reminded of a Bible passage from the New Testament book of John in Chapter 15, Verse 13 and it is so fitting for today.

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (NASB)

Celebrate the American Spirit and Resolve . . .

Pause to remember today.  Remember that our brothers and sisters gave their lives that day.  Remember that no terrorist can conquer the American spirit.  Despite the efforts of a few that day, our American resolve only rose up to conquer and defeat their efforts to strike down our great nation.  For what those terrorists discounted on that day is the very spirit that overwhelms us as Americans.  The spirit of selflessness and sacrifice that our very nation was founded upon pervades our culture and lifts our spirits to rise above whatever those that seek to destroy our way of life can throw at us.

On this day, 9/11, we reflect and we remember.

God bless their memory and God bless America!
